THE ART OF DECOUPAGE:
Decoupage is an art of decoration whereby an object is covered by colored paper cutouts (in this case, artists' prints on fine Italian music boxes) with special lacquer or varnish and possibly trimmed with effects such as gold leaf and other decorative elements. Each layer is sealed with multiple coats of varnish until the result looks like painting or inlay work. The traditional technique uses 30 to 40 layers of varnish or lacquer which are then sanded to a polished finish.
THE ART OF MARQUETRY:
While Ercolano is famous for their Decoupage, they also produce fine Marquetry, the art of inlaying designs of wood, often using four, five or more, different types of wood to obtain different natural shades or colors to portray flowers or instruments on their lovely musical cabinets.
