Zimbalist Music boxes are especially interesting and collectible architectural pieces.
This lovely high domed geodesic shaped, powder box is engraved with the various growth stages of the Lotus Flower. It rests on a lotus leaf base, plays "The Anniversary Waltz" and still has its original unused powder puff. Designed by Fred Zimbalist, a cousin of Ephrem Zimbalist, Sr. (the famed concert violinist) is in keeping with his other creations in the 1950s, but this one perhaps is a bit more symbolic.
The symbolic meaning of the lotus flower as per Wikipedia, is as follows:
The lotus has long been regarded as sacred by many of the world's religions, especially in India and Egypt, where it is held to be a symbol of the Universe itself. Rooted in the mud, the lotus rises to blossom clean and bright, symbolizing purity and resurrection. The leaves and flowers are borne high above the water.
Silver pieces such as this one were all hand tooled in India and no two were exactly the same. The main powder container measures 3 3/4" in diameter and stands approximately 4 7/8" high. The Leaf shaped base measures 5 1/4" back to front and 2 3/4" at it widest.
It's 18 note Thorens mechanism plays when the lid is lifted and is hidden behind a lovely engraved nickel silver over brass plate that is in keeping with the rest of the piece.
